Cheat mode for the NTSC-J version of the game was previous unknown. At the title screen, press:
Up, Right, A, C (a ring sound indicates correct input)
To cheat during normal gameplay, press START and then press:

A – Skip an Act
B – Skip a Zone
C – Skip to boss of Zone
X – Gain one life
Y – Gain one Sonic Medal
Z – Gain all Chaos Emeralds

Japanese Level Select Code

The Japanese version has its level select code that you can enter on the title screen using Down, Down, Down, and then the button below for the desired zone:

A – Rusty Ruin Zone
B – Spring Stadium Zone
C – Diamond Dust Zone
X – Volcanic Valley Zone
Y – Gene Gadget Zone
Z – Panic Puppet Zone
